VILLA MARIA SAUVIGNON BLANC RECOGNISED ON WORLD STAGE
Villa Maria Cellar Selection Sauvignon Blanc takes top accolades in London wine competition
Villa Maria has cemented New Zealand at the forefront of Sauvignon Blanc quality around the world, collecting a trophy and gold medal at the 40th annual International Wine & Spirits Competition held in London.
The Sauvignon Blanc Trophy was awarded to Villa Maria’s recently released Cellar Selection Sauvignon Blanc 2009, reinforcing the quality of fruit produced in the company’s Marlborough vineyards, and setting the benchmark for quality in this important export varietal.
The International Wine & Spirits Competition is the premier event of its kind in the world, attracting more than 7,000 entries from more than 80 different countries each year.
Villa Maria group winemaker Alastair Maling MW says Sauvignon Blanc is New Zealand’s most important export varietal and an award of this calibre supports the hard work that has gone into Villa Maria’s vineyards and winery to produce the best quality wines possible.
“Yield levels were strictly enforced this year and the 2009 vintage provided a perfect growing season, meaning that all Sauvignon Blanc fruit was picked in pristine condition with brilliant, intense flavours.
“Villa Maria’s Cellar Selection Sauvignon Blanc offers exceptional value for money; its part of a range of wines that consistently over-deliver on quality and this award is further proof of that,” he adds.
At the same competition, Villa Maria was shortlisted for New Zealand Wine Producer of the Year and collected Silver (Best in Class) awards for the Private Bin Pinot Grigio 2009 and Single Vineyard Graham Sauvignon Blanc 2008.
